GRIN MimbleWimble story
MimbleWimble was born in August 2016 when a user going by the alias "majorplayer" posted a link to a file in the IRC channel #bitcoin-wizards describing MimbleWimble as a private and scalable upgrade for Bitcoin.
It described a protocol that is both confidential and incredibly lightweight.
Andrew Poelstra formalized the approach, releasing a paper in the fall of 2016.
Soon after Poelstra released his paper, On Oct 20 2016, a pseudonymous developer using the name Ignotus Peverell, announced in the bitcoin wizards IRC channel that he began work on a minimal implementation of the protocol, which he named GRIN ツ
After Igno was joined on GitHub and started, additional developers interested in the project, a number of them with pseudonyms of various Harry Potter characters, the GRIN project gained traction.
The idea behind GRIN, a new blockchain protocol that promised to bring Bitcoin back to its cypherpunk roots. It is based around scalability and anonymity. People who like the original spirit of cypherpunk are interested in Grin's open-source code and grass-roots community.
FAIR LAUNCH
2.5 years later,in 15 January 2019, the first implementation of GRIN MimbleWimble launched. Grin is launched fairly — free of ICO, pre-mine or founder’s reward, rely on donations to keep working on the project.
Over the years, thousands of so-called altcoins have come out and then disappeared, leading some to call the whole thing an elaborate scam.However, Grin MimbleWimble claims that the GRIN does not intend to replicate models that have proven problematic or harmful to investors.
Igno Peverell, the project's pseudonymous founder;
"No ICO, pre-mine or funny business."
GRIN’s MISSION ツ
"Electronic transactions for all. Without censorship or restrictions."
‘‘ Designed for the decades to come, not just for tomorrow. To be used by anyone, anywhere. ‘‘
Electronic transactions for all, without censorship or restrictions: Grin empowers anyone to transact or save modern money without the fear of external control or oppression. Grin is designed for the decades to come, not just tomorrow. Grin wants to be usable by everyone, regardless of borders, culture, skills or access.
Private: Grin has no amounts and no addresses. Transactions can be trivially aggregated. To hide where a newly created transaction comes from, it gets relayed privately (a “random walk”) among peers before it is publicly announced.
Scalable: MimbleWimble leverages cryptography to allow most of the past transaction data to be removed. This guarantees Grin won’t crumble under its own weight in the long term.
Open: Grin is developed openly, by developers distributed all over the world. It’s not controlled by any company, foundation or individual. The coin distribution is designed to be as fair (but not gratis) as is known to be possible.
